With pieces of coal are coal quantities referred to consist of various size pieces so as from the seam were broken and promoted to grind on without coal. Areas of application for lump coal are or have been steam locomotives , steam ships and larger stationary solid fuel systems that burn the coal in a fixed bed.

For small fires ( house fires ) the coal is broken up and classified. The coal quantities, which are uniform in size, are differentiated in various size classifications. Depending on the grain size , chunks, nibbles, broken charcoal, nut charcoal, lump char, perforated charcoal, rust charcoal or grus are also spoken of - depending on the region.

In modern power plants, ground fine coal is used and burned in a gas stream or fluidized bed.
