St. Georg Hospital Calvörde

From ancient times, one of the church buildings in Calvörde is the St. George Hospital or poor house . The listed building is located at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 45, the date of construction is not known. The current building was built in the 18th century.

history

It is believed that the hospital originated with the plague , which hit Calvörde in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, but especially in 1566.

In 1590 the caste lords and the hospital master Heinrich Sporleder and Andreas Deichmann were handed down. The caste master was the administrator of the church poor fund and the hospital master was the administrator of the hospital that was already in existence at that time. It is known from 1648 that the hospital had eight chambers. It is also known that in times of plague hospital inmates were obliged to attend to the sick for a fee.

The first hospital was near the castle courtyard in Calvörde. After the fire of 1700, which almost completely cremated Calvörde, a new hospital was built in the cemetery in Calvörde Hünerdorf , where it still stands today. In 1800 the previously single-storey house was extended by a second floor, so that around 1800 twenty people found accommodation in the house. Above the front door it bears the inscription: Whoever has mercy on the poor, lends the master, he will reward him again for good. What is remarkable about the half-timbered construction are the curved struts. The house is covered by a half-hip roof .

In 1935 the hospital got new chimneys and in 1936 electric lights in all chambers. In 1938 it was thoroughly renovated, new foundations created, various new beams inserted and painted outside and inside. In 1995 the property was sold to a private individual. Today there is physiotherapy in the hospital .
