The St. Ignatius Church Vilnius ( Lithuanian Šv. Ignoto bažnyčia ) is a Roman Catholic church building in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . She has the patronage of St. Ignatius of Loyola , the founder of the Jesuit order . The Ignatius Church is located in the old town of Vilnius .

history

The Jesuit Church was built between 1622 and 1647 as a basilica with a dome and two towers. After a fire in the 18th century, it was rebuilt by Tomas Žebrauskas.

The Jesuit order was repealed in 1773 . In 1798 the church with the monastery buildings was handed over to the Preobrazhensk body guard regiment of the Russian army and redesigned for the Russian Orthodox liturgy. The artificial marble altar was demolished.

On November 23, 2004, the Archbishop of Vilnius designated the church as the central place of worship for the Lithuanian armed forces . There has been a youth choir at the church since November 2018.
