Under the umbrella of  St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH  , the Provost Parish of St. Augustinus  Gelsenkirchen operates  five operating companies as the majority shareholder:

With around 4,400 employees, St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH is the second largest employer in Gelsenkirchen.

history

On August 1st, 1996 St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH was founded. Until then, the voluntary members of the church council of the St. Augustine congregation had been responsible for the institutions. However, the increasingly diverse tasks could no longer be mastered in voluntary work alone.

However, the parish did not completely relinquish responsibility: 97 percent of the shares in the parent company remained in their hands. From 1999 until the structural reform of the diocese of Essen in 2007, the Liebfrauengemeinde, Gelsenkirchen-Neustadt, was a partner in St. Augustinus Heime GmbH. With the merger of this parish into the new large St. Augustine parish, the shares were united in their hands. The Caritas supporting organization of the diocese of Essen holds three percent of the shares.

In 2007, Sankt Marien-Hospital Buer GmbH became the fourth operating company to join the St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH group and has been closely associated with Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen ever since. Since July 2015, the facilities of the Elisabeth-Stift Catholic charity GmbH have been integrated into the system of service companies in the social and health sector under the umbrella of St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH.

In 2007 the provost parish of St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen established the St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen Foundation. It transferred to this foundation the company property that is contractually made available to the companies of St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH.

Holdings

Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen GmbH

The company operates the Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen, the Noah's Ark short-term facility for children and adolescents in need of severe care, and the outpatient nursing service at the Marienhospital. The  Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen , academic teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen, is an acute hospital with 579 beds and 11 specialist departments. With over 1,400 employees, the Marienhospital in Gelsenkirchen treats over 25,000 inpatients and over 50,000 outpatients per year.

The roots of the Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen go back to the year 1869. In 1977 the new hospital building was moved to the current location in Virchowstrasse.

St. Augustinus Heime GmbH

The business activities of St. Augustinus Heime GmbH focus on the care of the elderly, the care of children and young people, the management of residential buildings, commercial buildings and senior citizens' residences as well as cemetery management.

In the St. Vinzenz-Haus care facility, 93 elderly people in need of care can spend their retirement years in 63 single and 15 double rooms. In the St. Josef child and youth welfare facility, 102 children and young people are given a temporary home. These are mainly children and young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and from families who are overwhelmed with the upbringing or care of their children.

St. Augustinus Heime GmbH operates the Catholic Old Town Cemetery (Kirchstrasse) and the Catholic Neustadtfriedhof (Hohenfriedberger Strasse). The company also manages ecclesiastical real estate.

St. Augustinus Kindergarten GmbH

In the city center of Gelsenkirchen, the company runs the two Catholic kindergartens St. Nikolaus and St. Martin. The St. Lucia Catholic Kindergarten is located on the premises of the Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen.

One of the basic goals of the kindergartens run by St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH is to make a religious contribution to the upbringing of children. Long waiting lists are evidence of the excellent reputation that the kindergartens enjoy with their flexible range of childcare places for children between the ages of six months and six years.

In addition to the focus on looking after children under three, the kindergartens also offer places for integrative care for children with a disability. In this way everyone learns to be there for one another and to be considerate of the needs of others.

St. Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen-Buer GmbH

The Sankt Marien-Hospital Buer was founded in 1867. The hospital has been at its current location since 1909. Sankt Marien Hospital Buer is the city's oldest hospital and traditionally has a strong operational focus. Today the Sankt Marien-Hospital Buer is a basic and standard care hospital with 234 beds in five departments. More than 500 employees treat around 11,000 inpatients and over 15,000 outpatients per year.

Elisabeth-Stift GmbH

In 2015 the Elisabeth-Stift Catholic charity GmbH came under the umbrella of St. Augustinus Gelsenkirchen GmbH. The business activities of the operating company focus on the care of the elderly, the care of children and young people, and the management of residential and commercial buildings.

In the St. Elisabeth children's and youth center, which has been in existence since 1900, there are 70 childcare places available.

The St. Josef retirement and nursing home offers 93 inpatient places for individual care and support with nine short-term care places interspersed. These are spread over 61 single rooms and 16 double rooms.

Elisabeth Hospital GmbH

The Elisabeth Hospital in Gelsenkirchen-Erle has covered an important part of the medical care in the north of Gelsenkirchen since it was founded in 1902. Initially as a hospital for acute care with operative and conservative departments, the Elisabeth Hospital was established as a holistic provider of the Erle district. Due to the importance of the clinic for gynecology and obstetrics, the name “Vestische Frauenklinik” surrounded the archway of the house until the 1980s. In 1985 the previously broad spectrum of departments was concentrated in three departments (internal medicine, geriatrics and psychiatry and psychotherapy) with currently 223 beds.
