St. Gall Scientific Society

The St. Gallische Naturwissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (abbreviation: NWG ) is an association under Swiss law with its seat in St. Gallen. Its goals are to convey scientific knowledge to a wider public as well as to research and protect nature.

history

The association was founded on January 29, 1819 by the doctor and botanist Caspar Tobias Zollikofer with 50 members and is one of the oldest scientific associations in Switzerland. Zollikofer was the first president of the association until his death. One of its most famous presidents was the archaeologist Emil Bächler from 1933 to 1942 . Toni Bürgin, director of the St. Gallen Nature Museum, holds this position today .

Club activity

The activities of the NWG include lectures, visits and excursions as well as the issuing and support of scientific publications, the promotion of scientific collections and the care of its own natural monuments and reserves, such as the Lessweier located above the city or the industrial and natural trail Kleinesweier-St. Georgen-Mulenenschlucht.

Since 1858, the association has published regular volumes of reports in which articles appear on scientific subjects, most of which are related to Eastern Switzerland. Since 2015, it has also been awarding a prize for the best scientific Matura thesis in the region together with the WWF .

The NWG is a member of the Swiss Academy of Sciences .
