Friedrich Bernhard Wartmann's ancestors came from Wittenbach and Lömmenschwil . Wartmann was the grandson of a bookbinder (1803–1873) and the son of Jacob and Anna Helena Weibrata, née Wild. He was taught at the St. Gallen City School by Pastor Kunkler and others at the grammar school by the scholar Peter Scheitlin (1779–1848).

From 1849 to 1852 Wartmann studied at the University of Zurich . He then worked as an assistant to Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1855 he received his Ph. In 1863 he became rector of the canton school in St. Gallen, president of the St. Gallen Natural Science Society and, as his father's successor, from 1873 to 1902 director of the Natural Science Museum in St. Gallen .

In 1878 he founded St. Gallen's first botanical garden in the city park next to the museum he directed. Between 1862 and 1882 he published together with Bernhard Schenk (1833-1893) and Heinrich Georg Winter (1848-1887) the work Swiss cryptogams , a herbarium in 18 editions.

Wartmann's extensive collection is now in the St. Gallen Nature Museum . On May 24, 1908, the monument to Wartmann created by Henri Gisbert Geene (1865–1950) was inaugurated in the St. Gallen city park .

Wartmann described, among other things, the Bodensee forget-me-not .
