The St. John the Baptist Church is a Roman Catholic parish church of the Archdiocese of New York . The neo-Gothic structure is located at 210 West 31st Street near Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden .

history

The congregation was founded in 1840 as the second German Catholic congregation that was previously housed in St. Nicholas' Church. The first pastor was the Hungarian Zachary Kunze, who later became a pastor in St. Francis of Assisi's Church .

construction time

The church was built in several stages. Overall, it took from 1840 to 1893 before the church was completed, in the meantime a fire raged in the church in 1848 and caused severe damage. The tower was only built in 1891. The architect Napoleon LeBrun has already built several churches in New York.
