St. Joseph (Hattingen)
The St. Joseph Church in Welper was built in 1929 according to plans by the architects Metzendorf and Schneider. The reform settlement Gartenstadt Hüttenau in Welper and the Margarethenhöhe settlement in Essen also came from them .
In 1970 a renovation was carried out by the Münster architects Kösters and Balke. That also required a reorganization inside. The proposal to form a commitment to the world of work in the district and especially in the Welper district of the city of Hattingen with the help of the Henrichshütte plant met with broad approval from the Diocese of Essen. The interior of the church is a unique commitment to the working world of steel: Slabs form the altar, and baptismal fonts, tabernacles and pictures of the Stations of the Cross were made from steel and stainless steel in the Henrichshütte's training workshop based on designs by the Hattingen artist Egon Stratmann . The factory management of the Henrichshütte promoted and supported the work to set up the church. On the car-free Sunday, December 2, 1973, the altar was consecrated by the Bishop of Essen and later Cardinal Franz Hengsbach.
Since the restructuring in the Ruhr diocese from 2006 to 2008, the Josephskirche has belonged to the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Hattingen and within this it forms the main church of the parish of St. Joseph, to which, in addition to Welper, the subsidiary community of St. Johann Baptist in Blankenstein belongs.
