St. Lawrence Market South Building

The St. Lawrence Market , together with the Kensington Market, is one of the main markets in the Canadian city of Toronto . The market is located in the eastern part of downtown, bounded west by Lower Jarvis Street, south by The Esplanade and north by King Street East.

In 1803, by order of Lieutenant Governor Peter Hunter, a first, permanent wooden market was built, which was replaced by a square brick building in 1831 and has also been the meeting point of the city council since 1834. This building was destroyed by fire in 1849 and replaced by the new St. Lawrence Hall in 1850.

From 1845 to 1899 St. Lawrence Hall was the seat of the town hall. The first floor of the Henry Bowyer Lane-designed building also served as the Toronto Police headquarters.

From 1971 to 1987 the St. Lawrence Hall was renovated, it now houses retail stores on the ground floor, municipal authorities on the first floor, and the top floor with the great hall and the adjoining rooms is rented out.

In 1851, the new North Market was also built, which was located at the south end of St. Lawrence Hall. The northern market and the southern market were connected by a long archway. At the turn of the century, the north market was demolished and replaced by a new one in 1904. Both markets were connected by a canopy over Front Street, which was removed in 1954. Every Saturday there has been a market for farmers in the Nordmarkt for 75 years, the rest of the time the building is for rent.
