The Roman Catholic Church of St. Theresa is a listed church building on Polsumer Straße in Gelsenkirchen-Hassel .

History and architecture

With a new settlement, a new Roman Catholic church was built between 1959 and 1960 in the north of Gelsenkirchen in the Hassel district. The building was designed according to plans by the Cologne architect Karl Band . The construction connects concrete and brick surfaces on a trapezoidal floor plan. A campanile on a circular floor plan is placed next to the church. The space program is supplemented by a baptismal chapel and a Marienkapelle. There is also a community center, staff apartments and a kindergarten on the property.

The furnishings included the altar cross by the artist Hermann Klunker and a statue of the Virgin Mary by the sculptor Dieter von Levetzow . In 1967 a Walcker organ was added.

Closure and discussion about future use

The church building, which has been a listed building since 1999, was closed in 2007. In the meantime there have been temporary uses: in 2015/16 as refugee accommodation, and for some time as a warehouse for church inventory. In 2018 it was decided to market the site. In spring 2020, discussions will be held to put down the annexed buildings that are not listed and to build a new supermarket. A kindergarten would then be set up in the existing church.
