history
In 1946, an independent Roman Catholic parish was established in East Kilbride. Initially, she used a chapel in which services had been held since the beginning of the century. On November 21, 1959, Bishop James Scanlan broke ground. The building was built until 1964 to a design by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia . It is considered an outstanding example of contemporary church architecture and was awarded the bronze medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1964. In 1983 the 27 m high bell tower was demolished due to structural defects.
description
St Bride's Church is located between Whitemoss Avenue and Platthorn Drive in central East Kilbride. The elongated red brick church is one story. A rounded constriction in the middle of the building structures the façades with their blind slit windows below the flat roof . The entrance portal is hidden in the constriction. In particular, the north facade facing Whitemoss Avenue is structured by vertical textures. Three copper dormers protrude from the flat roof, providing daylight to the interior. The building offers 800 seats.
On the west side is a flat complex with a Z-shaped floor plan. This borders on two sides, the church on the third side a forecourt. This is laid out with black brick . Rays from red brick symbolize Christ as the light of the world.
