The St Cuthbert's Church is the ruin of a former parish church in the Scottish village of Monkton in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

A church building existed at this location by the 12th century at the latest. This subordinated Walter FitzAlan , High Steward of Scotland , between 1165 and 1172 of the Abbey of Paisley . The fragments preserved today are a follow-up building from the early 13th century. The building was the parish of the parish until the congregations of Monkton and Prestwick merged in the late 16th century. An extension on the north side dates from the post-Reformation period. During the 17th century, the interior was modernized. The building was abandoned in 1837 and is now only preserved as a ruin.

The ruin is in an enclosed cemetery on the southern edge of Monkton. The elongated building has a floor area of ​​13.8 m × 5.6 m. There is also an extension with a gable roof on the north side . This measures 4.45 m × 4.15 m. The masonry is 1.1 m thick. The entrance portal with a profiled reveal is on the south side. Another entrance on the north side no longer corresponds to the original condition. As fall one was medieval grave plate used. On the east gable sits a roof turret with a bell. The former gable roof has collapsed in the meantime.
