The City and Industry Museum Rüsselsheim (also Museum Rüsselsheim ) in the southern Hessian city of Rüsselsheim am Main presents cultural, social, economic, technical and political developments from prehistoric times to the 20th century.

Conception

The exhibition in the Rüsselsheim Fortress provides information under the motto “Experience history. From the hand ax to the industrial robot - from the Stone Age to the modern age ” to the development of work techniques and working conditions from prehistory to the present .

The museum, founded in 1976, was awarded the Museum Prize of the Council of Europe as a model museum in 1979 due to the exhibition concept, which for the first time combined technical, industrial and social history and was described as "currently one of the most important and influential museums in Europe" .

One focus of the museum is the development of the Opel plant in the city. The German subsidiary of General Motors donated a complete assembly line and production machines as well as automobiles and motorcycles of the Opel brand. Some of the objects were given to the museum on permanent loan.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, monothematic special exhibitions are presented.

In 2004 the museum was significantly expanded and modernized.

The Rüsselsheim City and Industry Museum is part of the Rhine-Main Industrial Culture Route .

The city of Rüsselsheim offers various guided tours in the museum: a combination of a museum visit and an Opel factory tour, a guided tour through Verna Park on the banks of the Main and city tours.
