Northern city wall with a former moat

The town fortifications of Sankt Veit an der Glan , a town in the district of the same name in Carinthia ( Austria ), was first mentioned in a document in 1228 and its current substance essentially dates back to the 15th century.

From the city wall, which is up to 1.7 meters thick, more than 1000 running meters have been preserved at an average height of ten meters. The area in front of the former 20 to 25 meter wide moat was drained, but has remained largely undeveloped. Due to the advancing development of weapon technology, extensive reinforcement of the fortifications became necessary in the 16th century. This is how the seven-meter-wide kennel was created , which was reinforced by shell towers . A heavily renewed bastion tower has been preserved as a rotunda in front of it at the northwest corner. It is marked with 1532 on a stone. At the northwest corner , the so-called Herzogsburg was included in the fortification. The four tower-reinforced city gates were demolished from 1851 to 1890. The current gates in the city wall date from the 20th century.
