House Hövener

In the late Middle Ages there was a hospice for the Holy Spirit on the site of the current house . It was destroyed by a city fire in 1742. The property initially remained undeveloped.

The Hövener house was built in 1803/1804 by the merchant Camerarius Caspar Krüper. The palais-like building is in an exposed position directly on the market in the immediate vicinity of the town hall.

In 1815 the house was bought by Charlotte Catharina Weed. Her family was active in the iron and steel industry. The last member of this family was the director of studies Wilhelmine Hövener, who lived in the house until her death at the age of 93.

exhibition

A particular focus was on mining and metallurgy . The museum also featured a dinosaur skeleton that was discovered during excavations near the village of Nehden . A total of 15 skeletons of the genus Iguanodon were found.
