Wormwood Scrubs - one of the headwaters of Stamford Brook

The Stamford Brook is a watercourse in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and the London Borough of Ealing . It arises from three headwaters that arise in Acton and the Wormwood Scrubs and merge in Ravenscourt Park . In the park, the watercourse once served to supply lakes and wells.

The easternmost of the tributaries connected to the Acton Wells, whose waters were known as a light laxative, but the tributary was characterized as a sewer in the 18th century. The middle tributary was known as Warple and the western one as Mill Hill Stream or Mill Hill Brook .

The name Stamford Brook is based on a "stone ford" that crossed the river on King Street in Hammersmith at the height of what is now City Hall. From King Street to Furnivall Gardens , the watercourse widened and was navigable under the name Hammersmith Creek . The upper course was buried below the surface until 1900 and the lower course until 1936. The outlet into the Thames at Furnivall Gardens is the only part of the water course that is still visible today.

In 2008 there was a proposal to move the A4 road underground in Hammersmith, thereby bringing the watercourse back to the surface and reconnecting Hammersmith to the Thames.
