A stander was a military unit in the Middle Ages .

A stander was a military sub-unit at the time of the Crusades that consisted of 10 infantrymen. The name comes from the fact that each such unit was assigned a large banner ( stander ).

This division of units was common among the knightly orders at the time of the Crusades.
