Stars! is a turn-based 4X strategy game for PC and Windows . It is based on the idea of VGA Planets by Tim Wisseman.

history

Star! was produced in 1995 by Jeff McBride and Jeff Johnson . It was initially distributed in Germany as shareware by STC Computerservice. It was later bought and commercialized by Empire Interactive. The game remained in the possession of Empire Interactive until it was dissolved in early May 2009.

Gameplay

Up to 16 players can participate, including computer players. Each player can put together a race made to measure. Each player starts with a home planet and has to build spaceships, explore the galaxy, colonize other planets, mine raw materials, establish industry, etc.

The victory conditions can be selected from various criteria before the start. A "host" evaluates the trains. In single player mode this is your own PC, in multiplayer it is the game master's PC. The host receives the moves of the players, evaluates them and creates a new score for each player.

Local networks and the Internet were not yet widespread at that time. Stars! Multiplayer games were therefore mainly handled as play-by-e-mail . H. the files with train data or the score were transferred by email , e.g. B. within the FidoNet network. For this, of course, fixed delivery dates had to be agreed.

The special attraction of stars! lay in

  • a good game balance,
  • very variable breeds,
  • useful mechanisms for automating micromanagement and
  • "Fair" computer opponents with decent skill levels.
