Transfer switch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Static Transfer Switch (STS), or automatic transfer switch , is an electronic switch for switching to an alternative power supply path in larger UPS systems such as in data centers .

In data centers, cross-cabling , a redundant electrical supply via two separate paths, is used to enable multiple supply paths for the operating voltage for all servers with more than one power supply unit . In this way, one of the possible single points of failure , here for the power supply, can be bypassed. If a server or a network component ( e.g. router ) only has one power supply unit (for the operating voltage), this device will no longer be supplied with power if one side of the redundant feed fails. Here the STS takes over the supply by switching the individual power pack of the device to an active supply. This switching process must take place so quickly that the connected device does not malfunction. A similar problem occurs with devices with more than 2 power supplies (for example switches with 3 power supplies) and can also be solved by means of the STS.

The STS is a successor to the Automatic Transfer Switch with improved switching times to prevent malfunctions in sensitive components.
