Static and ecstatic op.214 (German: static and ecstatic ) is an orchestral work by the Austrian-American composer Ernst Krenek . The composition was commissioned by Paul Sacher , to whom it is also dedicated "in friendship". The work was created after an exchange of letters between Paul Sacher and Ernst Krenek between October 29, 1971 and May 18, 1972 in Albuquerque , New Mexico, and Palm Springs. It was premiered by Krenek himself on March 23, 1973 in Zurich.

construction

In general, the work can be assigned to serial music . The composition is based on an all-interval series , a special form of the twelve-tone series . The piece is divided into 10 movements without a title. Sentences 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8 are static in character , while sentences 2, 3, 6, 9 and 10 are ecstatic . The composition can be viewed as a "review", as a retrospective of Krenek's "own, step-by-step developed technique". It is "not polystylistic , but polytechnical."
