The Puy Foradado dam was a Roman dam near the Spanish municipality of Uncastillo , Zaragoza province , in Aragon .

Finding

The barrier structure , which was built in the 2nd or 3rd century and located in the important water system of Los Bañales, was constructed as a weight arched wall . It is a weight wall arched against the slope that was about two meters high and one meter wide at the base. Because of the heavy silting of the system, only four layers of neatly laid, large stones in opus quadratum can be detected above ground . The dam wall, which is about 56 meters long at the top of the wall, rose slightly to the north. It closed off a natural small reservoir that had formed north of the wall and was fed by numerous streams in the area. An underground aqueduct (Fontena Diabolo) started from the dammed lake, the channels of which could be observed at various points in the area. It probably served the rural water supply of the numerous Roman villas in Los Bañales . The remains of a Roman aqueduct and a thermal bath are also nearby .

Current situation

Since 2008 the provincial government of Aragon, a group of Spanish universities and sponsors from the private sector have been promoting the Aragón Romano archaeological research project . In addition to the inventory of Roman sites, facilities from Roman times that are important for tourism are archaeologically examined or reconstructed. On the initiative of the research group, the wall structures of the dam near Uncastillo were examined and, in consultation with the property owner, the soil monument could be saved from further destruction by the agricultural use of the site. The dam is now a local attraction as an impressive example of Roman structural engineering . On the "Ruta arqueológica en Los Bañales" you can visit all the Roman and medieval ruins that have been examined so far.
