The Stearman Aircraft Corporation was an American aircraft manufacturer .

The company was founded by Lloyd Stearman in Venice ( California ) in October 1926 , but moved to Wichita (Kansas) a short time later in September 1927 . Two years later he sold the company to the United Aircraft and Transport Corporation .

In September 1934, United was forced to separate the airline ( United Airlines ) and aircraft manufacturing operations. At this time Boeing became independent again and Stearman became a subsidiary of Boeing and in 1939 their Wichita division .

Stearman officially ceased to operate under the brand, but it was at this time that the Stearman factories developed their most successful model, the Stearman 75 (see Boeing-Stearman PT-17 ), which was the main training aircraft for the US armed forces during World War II . This aircraft was and is simply called the Stearmans or Boeing Stearmans , although Stearman developed many other aircraft which have been largely forgotten.
