Stone planer

A stone plane from France for soft stone

The stone planer is a historical Steinmetz tool , which in the soft rock machining was used until the advent of electrically driven hand-held machines.

It consisted of an elongated wooden handle, which was ergonomically designed, and in the underside of which a metal strip bent into prongs was inserted. The plane was used to level and smooth soft stone surfaces with one hand. The tool is no longer used in Germany today, as there are hand-held grinding machines for it. In France it is used for the particularly soft limestones that occur frequently .
