Stephan Rabl

Stephan Rabl (* 1964 in the Waldviertel , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian cultural worker. He is the artistic director of various international theater and dance festivals. From 1984 to 2002 he was a. a. active as a clown, actor, performer, freelance theater maker and festival director. Since 2004 he has been the director and artistic director of DSCHUNGEL WIEN - theater for young audiences in the MuseumsQuartier Wien.

Professional background

Stephan Rabl made his first artistic encounters in a seminar in the "École de Mime et Clown" Limoges - a clown theater for adults. In 1986 he founded the clown company “Die Schockerlinge” - the only clown troupe in Austria. In the eighties he gained his first experience as an actor in children's theater, where he was seen in 16 theater productions until 2002.

In the nineties, Stephan Rabl founded and directed the SZENE BUNTE WÄHNE Festival in Lower Austria (1991–2003) and the SZENE BUNTE WÄHNE Dance Festival in Vienna (1998–2004), the only annual international dance festival for a young audience in the world. In 2005 he was the curator for the youth theater program “Momentmal” Festival in Berlin.

From 2003 to 2011 Stephan Rabl was chairman of ASSITEJ Austria and from 2002 to 2014 he was on the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ International / Worldwide Association of Professional Theater for Young Audiences.

From 2002 to 2015 Stephan Rabl was the artistic director of the SCHÄXPIR international theater festival , one of the largest international theater festivals for young audiences in Linz. In 2003 he was appointed director of DSCHUNGEL WIEN in order to build it up. Since the opening of the theater house in 2004 he has been director and artistic director of DSCHUNGEL WIEN - theater house for young audiences .

Since 2005 he has also worked as a director. His numerous directing and staging work include a .: "African Fairy Tales", "Secret Worlds", "Scented Dreams" and "Surprise".
