The Steyr SL 11 HUA 280 is a joint bus of the then remaining Austrian bus manufacturers Steyr Daimler Puch and Gräf & Stift . It is not a standard bus. The bodies were standardized, but the engine and drive train were in-house developments at Steyr and units from the owner MAN at Gräf & Stift . The shared bus from Gräf & Stift was called GSÜH 290 M12 .
There were two engine variants of the SL 11 HUA 280. The Steyr / Saurer 9 FUA with 280 hp was installed until 1988 . From 1988 the Mercedes OM447hLA followed, also with 280 hp. There were two body variants, the Steyr SL 11 HUA 280 intercity bus and the Steyr SFL 11 HUA 280 long-distance bus . At Gräf & Stift there were also overland and long-distance line variants with five engines from 280 hp to 370 hp. Gräf & Stift also supplied 10 m variants. Other body variants of the Austrian bus were articulated trains and city buses. However, this was only available from Steyr.

customer

The first prototypes were built in 1984 under the designation Steyr SL 11 HUA 250 with a 250 HP Steyr engine. The three prototypes delivered to the post office were marked PT 13.735, PT 13.736 and PT 13.738. They were first approved in March 1984. In 1984, the railway also received two prototypes under the name Steyr SL 11 HUA 250/93 . These were marked BB 4.003 and BB 4.501. There was still a pilot series with the Steyr / Saurer 9FUA engine from the first series vehicles. From this pre-series under the name Steyr SL 11 HUA 280 two more vehicles were delivered to the railway in 1985. These were marked BB 4.004 and BB 4.502. The Post also received another three pre-series vehicles with the Steyr / Saurer 9FUA engine from the first series in 1984 with PT 13.737 and 1985 with PT 13.741 and PT 13.742 . These were delivered as a long-distance line variant with the designation Steyr SFL 11 HUA 280 . The series vehicles followed from 1986 to 1992. The first 21 series vehicles for the post office were delivered in December 1986 with the license plates PT 14,011 to PT 14,031. The first series of 24 vehicles to the railroad was delivered in 1987 with the license plates BB 4.005 to 4.028. Several hundred vehicles with an identical structure were also bodyworked by ÖAF Gräf & Stift AG
from the second joint type Gräf & Stift GSÜH 290 M12 (prototype GSÜH 280 M12 ) and later the engine variants GSÜH 270 M12 , GSÜH 320 M12 and GSÜH 370 M12 . However, these were delivered with a drive train and engines from MAN .

The deliveries at the Post ended in June 1992 with BD 14,660. The last vehicle on the railway was in 1992 BD 4.130.

503 buses of the types SL 11 HUA 280 and SFL 11 HUA 280 were delivered to the post office and railroad alone. The Post received a total of 384 intercity buses (regular and long-distance routes), the ÖBB received 119 such vehicles.

The SL 11 HUA 280 joint bus is the last intercity bus from Steyr from a purely Austrian production.

The following tables contain the line and long-distance line variants. City buses and articulated buses are not counted. However, no long-distance line variant SFL 11 HUA 280 was delivered to the ÖBB, only the successor Steyr SFL 12 HUA 285 and SFL 12 HUA 360 with VOLVO B10B engine and chassis.

variants

There was also the long-distance line variant SFL 11 HUA 280 . There was no 10 m variant of the Steyr shared bus. This was exclusively supplied by Gräf & Stift under the designations GSÜH 240 M10 , GSÜH 270 M10 and GSÜH 320 M10 . In addition, only the Steyr SS 11 HU 200 and Steyr SS 11 HUA 250 city bus variants were available from 1979 as prototypes under the name Transitbus, and the Steyr SS 11 HUA 240 and Steyr SS 11 HUA 280 from 1987 as series vehicles under the name Österreichbus or Shared bus with the distinctive bumper. According to the type designation, the engines Steyr // Saurer 5FU with 200 HP, Steyr // Saurer 5FUA with 250 HP, Steyr // Saurer 9FUA with 280 HP and Mercedes OM447hLA with also 280 HP were used. There were both two-door and three-door versions. Articulated trains of the shared bus were built exclusively by Steyr. The prototypes were delivered in 1988 under the name Steyr SG 18 HUA 280 with the identification PT 14.232 and PT 14.233 and the Steyr / Saurer engine 9FUA. From 1991 the vehicles were built under the name Steyr SG 18 HUA 340 with the more powerful VOLVO engine THD102 KD340 starting with BD 14.474. In both cases it was exclusively an articulated pusher bus with a rear engine and drive on the third axle.

Predecessor and successor

The predecessor of the SL 11 HUA 280 was the Steyr-Mercedes SML 14H 256 and the Gräf & Stift GSÜH 240 M12. The successor to the SL 11 HUA 280 was the Steyr SL 12 HUA 285 on a Volvo B10B chassis and the Gräf & Stift GSÜH 370 M12.

Whereabouts

There are only very few copies left by private companies in Austria and Germany. In the Balkans, for example, some former post and rail buses of this type are still in use.
In Horb, the ÖBB SL11 BB4021 built in 1987 with a Steyr engine and the Post SL11 PT14454 built in 1990 as a vintage bus.
An Upper Austrian collector also has the Post SL11 PT14310 built in 1989 with a Mercedes engine.
