The former collegiate church of St. Peter is a Roman Catholic parish church in Bad Waldsee in Upper Swabia.

history

The history of the church goes back to the year 851, when a parish church in Waldsee is mentioned for the first time. In 1181 an Augustinian canon monastery was established at the church . The current church was built in 1479 as a Gothic, three-aisled basilica . From 1709 both the exterior and the interior of the basilica were redesigned in Baroque style. The nave was extended to the west from 1765 and completed with the two mighty twin towers. The monastery existed until 1788.

architecture

The pillar arcades of the nave and the choir are still preserved from the Gothic building. The two baroque, 60 m high towers are arranged at a corner - a type of west facade that is seldom found. The architect was Jakob Emele , who also realized the motif for the diagonal pavilions of the Tettnang Castle .

Furnishing

The baroque high altar from 1712, which was created by the builder of the Wieskirche, Dominikus Zimmermann , is of particular importance . The altar is 11 m high and 7 m wide. The main pictorial work on the altar is the "Coronation of Mary" by the sculptor Jakob Bendl from 1616. The side figures of the main altar are by Johann Georg Reusch (1690–1770), who also designed the pulpit (1725) and the two side altars in honor of Mary and the St. Josef (1720 or 1724) created. An important work of art is the tomb of George I Truchseß von Waldburg from the late 15th century in the northern choir chapel. A neo-Gothic redesign from 1878/79 was removed again in 1913/14.

location

The house of God is a station on the Upper Swabian Way of St. James .
