Schürmatt Foundation

The Schürmatt Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Zetzwil . It was founded in 1963 by the Reformed Church of Aargau to offer good training and living places for disabled children. The foundation employs around 450 people at 14 locations. She looks after and advises disabled people and their relatives. Around 550 children, adolescents and adults with cognitive and multiple disabilities as well as developmentally retarded children receive direct care. The foundation has been running cooperative kindergartens in Holziken, Gontenschwil, Aarau Rohr since 2002 and a cooperative class in Densbüren from 2019.

The beginnings of the Schürmatt Foundation

The Schürmatt Foundation was founded in 1963 on the basis of a motion by Pastor Hans Scheider, Frick, on July 9, 1956 in the Synod of the Reformed Church in Aargau. After the purchase of land in the "Schürmatt" in Zetzwil in 1962 and the subsequent construction project, the Schürmatt Foundation began operations on July 5, 1965, with the reception of 11 boys and 6 girls. At the end of 1965, 88 children lived in the residential groups, and another 20 pupils attended the day special school. There were also 50 children on the registration list. The adult section opened in 1982.

2010 to 2020

Until 2011, the operation of the offers was mainly concentrated on the Schürmatt location and neighboring communities. Starting in 2011, the Schürmatt Foundation has grown significantly in terms of clients, employees and sales.

In addition to HPS Zetzwil, which has been running the Schürmatt Foundation since its early days, the HPS Aarau became sponsor on January 1, 2013. Another school location was added in 2015 with the opening and commissioning of the curative education center for work level and vocational preparation HZWB in Othmarsingen.

The Board of Trustees of the Schürmatt Foundation

The election, tasks and competencies of the Board of Trustees result from Articles 5 and 7 of the deed of foundation dated August 19, 1993.

Article 5: Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees consists of 9 to 13 members.
These are chosen as follows:
  • Four members through the electoral committee of the Reformed Synod;
  • the other members through the Reformed Council of Churches.
The President of the Foundation Council is elected by the Council of Churches. In addition, the Board of Trustees constitutes itself and determines the type of external representation. The secretary and treasurer do not have to belong to the foundation board.
The foundation board is the highest body of the foundation. He gathers as needed. He elects the overall management and the control body. The Board of Trustees can delegate certain tasks to working committees.
The term of office of the members of the Board of Trustees is four years. Re-election is permitted.
