Stirling is the second largest island in the West Pacific Treasury Islands . It belongs to the western province of the island state of Solomon Islands .
The almost 9 km² and six kilometers long island is located one kilometer south of Mono . During the Second World War , the US armed forces built a strategically important runway on Stirling . The island is uninhabited today.
