The Stock Exchange of Mauritius (SEM) ( French : Bourse de Maurice) is Stock Exchange , based in Port Louis , capital of Mauritius . The SEM operates two markets: the Official Market and the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM). Since the successful internationalization of the market in the 2010s, the market capitalization in relation to the gross domestic product in Mauritius has been one of the highest in Africa.

The 1988 Stock Exchange Act created a small but thriving stock exchange operated by the Stock Exchange of Mauritius. The law also set up the Exchange Commission (SEC), which controls and oversees the exchange transactions. The regulatory infrastructure was designed with the help of the Bourse de Paris . Stock trading began in 1989.

The SEM was opened to foreign investors in 1994 after foreign exchange controls were abolished. Foreign investors do not need authorization to trade stocks unless the investment is for the purpose of legal or administrative control of a Mauritian company.

The Stock Exchange of Mauritius has been a public company since 2008.
