Stollen (ski tour)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under stollen means the freezing of snow on the climbing skins in ski mountaineering . The accumulations of snow frozen to the skin make it much more difficult to get ahead on a ski tour.

If the wrong ski wax is used on cross-country skis, clumps can also form. Adhesive waxes for higher temperatures lead to the fact that snow freezes onto the ski in cold, shaded sections or with changing snow conditions.

process

The reason for the tunnels of skins is a temperature difference in the snow from warm to cold during a tour. While a (poorly impregnated) fur soaks up in water in the warmer, slushy snow, the colder snow freezes in clumps on the more humid spots on the tour.

prevention

When a climbing skin starts to clump on a ski tour, there is little remedy. Attempts can be made to rub the moisture from the fur to dry the fur or to treat it with impregnating agents . Experts recommend impregnation wax and mohair spray or to make sure that the surface area is free of ice and that is not stuck at the time of purchase.

In addition to the climbing performance, the gliding properties and the type of attachment to the touring ski, the cleat properties of ski touring skins are of great importance in practice.
