A darning egg is an object that corresponds in shape and size to a hen's egg . It is pushed under the hole in a piece of clothing to plug a hole and makes darning work easier by stretching the fabric.

Darning are usually turned from wood . However, there are also stuffing rings made of other materials. Up into the twentieth century, elaborate stuffing with inlays and other decorations were made, which were given away and collected like thimbles .

Konrad Adenauer , who also worked as an inventor, invented the darning egg illuminated from the inside. But it didn't catch on.
