Darning mushroom

Darning mushroom

A darning mushroom is an object which, when plug a hole in stockings or socks is used. The darning mushroom or the darning egg, which is different in shape but has the same function, can be found in almost every sewing basket . It is pushed into the damaged stocking or sock under the hole to be darned and facilitates darning work by stretching the fabric.

Darning mushrooms are usually turned from wood and have a flat underside and a surface that is curved upwards. They are usually painted red or left in natural wood and thus resemble the cap of a toadstool , which explains the name. Darning mushrooms have either a stem or a recess for the index finger on their otherwise smooth underside so that they can be held with one hand. There are also versions made of plastic (in the past mostly Bakelite ). The lighting of the darning mushroom or the darning ice cream was an invention of Konrad Adenauer , but it did not catch on.
