history

The first beach hall, 1908

Several buildings named “Strandhalle” were built one after the other in Wilhelmshaven. The first beach hall from 1896 was a wooden structure. It was rebuilt and expanded in 1898 and then again in 1912. The guests could take warm seaside baths in the beach hall. In 1923 this first beach hall in Wilhelmshaven was badly damaged by a storm surge and in 1926 it was replaced by a successor building, in whose basement the first sea water aquarium was opened on April 11, 1927.

This beach hall by Gustav Lübbers , which was opened on March 28, 1926, was demolished in 1938 and replaced by a round building, the facade of which has been preserved. The ensemble also included a water tower with a clock for the south beach. The aquarium was moved under the terrace of the new beach hall, but could not be completed because of the outbreak of war. The construction work was not completed until 1950 and the aquarium could be opened with almost 40 tanks. In 1987/88 the south beach promenade was redesigned. At that time the aquarium was also rebuilt and equipped with a seal tank.

Another redesign took place in 2001/02. Since then, the renovated beach hall has been merged with the completely redesigned old sea water aquarium. An extension was built on the former terrace, creating space for a show aquarium, a restaurant and a children's play area. With regard to the aspects of the monument protection, some conflicts arose during this last renovation. The demand of the building regulation office to restore the original lattice windows instead of the panoramic windows of the beach hall, which were later used for a long time, sparked disputes. The former ballroom and dining room, which, among other things, housed the children's play area, has completely lost its original appearance. Critics stated: "The interior charisma of the unique dome building is destroyed by this use [...]."
