A matchstick puzzle is a form of puzzle in which equations or geometric figures are represented with the help of matches . To solve the puzzle, a match or several matches must be thrown over. To make it easier to name the solution, the individual matches are often numbered.

Matchstick puzzles are often printed in puzzle magazines or in the puzzle section of newspapers or magazines.

Equations

The starting point for this matchstick puzzle is a wrong equation. The equation should be corrected by throwing a match. The numbers shown are based on either the Arabic or Roman numerical system.

Geometric figures

With this shape, geometric figures (e.g. triangles or rectangles) should be displayed. This type usually has a higher level of difficulty than the matchstick puzzles, which are based on equations. As a rule, several matches have to be thrown in order to solve the task.
