The Kern Study Collection is an exhibition in the Swiss city of Aarau .

The renowned measuring instruments manufacturer Kern & Co . AG was closed in 1992 after it had been taken over by what was then Wild Heerbrugg in 1988 . An extensive collection of historically valuable equipment, documents, pictures, business books and the library was donated to the Aarau City Museum .

A small part of the collection was able to be set up in the attic of the Schlössliturm from 1998 and shown to the public. The rest had to be temporarily stored in various depots and storage rooms. There was a lack of suitable space to effectively present the extensive collection.

It was not until 2008 that the decision was made to prepare a disused civil defense facility in the immediate vicinity of the City Museum for the Kern Collection. The premises were renovated with great effort and provided with the necessary facilities that are necessary for the reception of visitors.

The core study collection has existed since May 2009.

As the name suggests, the holdings in a study collection are generally not displayed behind glass. The audience has the opportunity to show the objects in function and occasionally manipulate them themselves, in the presence and with the support of experts. Due to the personnel requirements, the museum is not open all the time, but only at certain times or by appointment.
