Sulpicius Rufus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sulpicius Rufus († 48 AD) was a noble of the early Roman Empire who came from the patrician family of the Sulpicians .

Sulpicius Rufus, who was ludi procurator , is only mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus in connection with the trial against the Empress Valeria Messalina . She had started a relationship with the young senator Gaius Silius and finally married him in 48 AD, which was tantamount to a divorce from her previous husband Claudius . When the emperor was informed of this and proceeded to punish Silius and his unfaithful wife, a number of other distinguished Romans, including Sulpicius Rufus, were executed as accomplices.
