Sultanovskaya Mosque

The Sultanovskaya Mosque ( Russian Султановская мечеть , Tatar Солтан мәчете: Soltan Mosque , also Eighth Cathedral ) is located in Kazan , capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan .

The mosque was built in 1867 or 1868 by the Kazan merchant Jihanscha Ussmanow (1817–1872), the architect was PI Romanow. It was built in a traditional Tatar- Bulgarian architecture of the Middle Ages, which contains eclectic elements of the Russian National Romanticism. The three- story minaret is located directly above the entrance.

The Tatar cleric Shihabetdin Marjani held the first prayer in the mosque .

On November 11, 1931, the mosque was closed by the Soviet authorities. In 1990 the minaret was restored and in 1994 the mosque was returned to the faithful.
