Sunweb is part of the Sundio Group International GmbH. In 1991 entrepreneur Joost Romeijn founded today's Sundio Group International GmbH under the name GOGO Tours. The company name was renamed Sunweb in the course of the Internet boom. In the years that followed, the Sunweb Group took over several companies. These include Husk Travel, X-Travel and Jiba. In 2007 the company name was changed to Sundio Group International GmbH . This was followed by several international takeovers. Sunweb is one of the most important brands in the Sundio Group. Sundio has also been active in Germany since 2007. In total, almost a million people travel with Sundio International each year.

In 2015 Sunweb was the co-sponsor of the Giant-Alpecin cycling team . Sunweb has been the team's main sponsor since 2017. The team name is now Team Sunweb .
