Supernova Early Warning System

SNEWS , the Super Nova Early Warning System ( Super Nova early warning system ), is a composite of neutrino telescopes , which are parallel to their other research by the earliest possible signs of a Super Nova -Explosion in the Milky Way search.

Since the neutrinos are the first sign of a supernova explosion, the aim is to ensure that other instruments of observational astronomy can be directed at the supernova in good time. Thus the neutrinos of the supernova 1987A reached the earth three hours before the light (although SNEWS did not exist at the time).

The detectors send messages via neutrinos to a computer at Brookhaven National Laboratory to identify a supernova. If the SNEWS computer detects signals from two detectors within 10 seconds, it sends an alarm to observatories around the world so they can watch the supernova.

In 2014 the detectors Borexino , Super-Kamiokande , Large Volume Detector (LVD), KamLand and IceCube were connected to the SNEWS .
