Suprasegmental
Suprasegmental is called something in linguistics that is not covered by the breakdown ( segmentation ) of a linguistic utterance into smaller linguistic units (such as syllables , morphemes and phonemes ) because it spans sounds, syllables and morphemes.
Thus, the suprasegmental phonology is the phonology that spans sounds .
That which is cross-segment is called a suprasegmental feature . These include the accent and intonation .
features
Jürgen E. Schmidt distinguishes three levels of suprasegmental features:
- auditory characteristics (duration, pitch, prominence)
- acoustic characteristics (temporal extension, basic frequency, intensity)
- Articulatory characteristics (timing of articulation movements, vibration behavior of the vocal folds, generation and condition of the exhaled airflow)
