The Surakul Stadium ( Thai : สนาม กีฬา สุ ระ กุล ) is a multifunctional stadium on the island of Phuket in Thailand .
The stadium was opened in 1959. It is used for a variety of different events. The last King's Cup games were held in this stadium in 2009. The biggest event, however, was the 2008 Southeast Asian Cup . Originally planned as the venue was Bangkok. Due to the political unrest and the occupation of the airport in Bangkok, the venue was moved to Phuket at short notice. The Surakul Stadium was not the first choice, as there are stadiums in other cities in Thailand that offer better comfort and are more modern. However, the easiest way to get to Phuket for both the participating teams and spectators was by plane . For the first time, Phuket was able to successfully prove that it is suitable for larger football events.
Shortly after the end of the tournament, the Phuket FC club was founded, which now plays its home games in this stadium. The stadium is owned by the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization . It is one of the few stadiums in Thailand that is in the hands of local authorities. This in turn makes it difficult, due to a lack of financial means, to renovate the stadium and to allow other major sporting events to take place here in the future.
