Suvla on the Gallipoli Peninsula

Suvla is a bay in the west of the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey .

The landing in Suvla Bay and the attack that followed was the last major attempt (also known as the August Offensive ) by the British to take control of the Gallipoli Peninsula. Suvla played an important role in the defense of the peninsula from the Turks in the Battle of Gallipoli .

The name of Suvla Bay was a public issue again during the 1970s when Eric Bogle released his folk song And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda in 1972 .
