The Suvorov Museum ( Russian Государственный мемориальный музей А.В. Суворова ) is a military museum in Saint Petersburg . The building is located in the historical center of Saint Petersburg at the intersection of Tavritschesskaya and Kirochnaya streets (address: 43 Kirochnaya street). It was built according to plans by the architects Alexander von Hohen and Hermann Grimm in the style of historical Russian fortresses with a watchtower and curtain wall.

The Suvorov Museum was founded in 1900, on the 100th anniversary of the death of Generalissimo Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov . It existed until 1918. Under Soviet rule, it was initially closed and the collections were handed over to various museums. In the 1930s the building was used by the Aviation Museum. During the Second World War damaged by a German bomb, began in 1950 the restoration of the museum, which opened in 1951 again. A restoration took place from 1988 to 1998. The museum has approximately 29,000 visitors a year.

Exhibits

The collections are located in five halls with a total area of ​​650 m² and include around 108,000 exhibits , including a collection of personal items from Suvorov's possession, a collection of 60,000 tin soldiers (the largest such collection in Russia), picture galleries of Russian commanders and officers, war trophies (such as 300 Turkish flags, a French cannon that was captured during the battle of Novi ) and other pieces from the 18th century, such as the hat Frederick II lost in the battle of Kunersdorf . An exhibition in a separate room is dedicated to the Suvorov family and grandchildren.
