Svenska Folkförbundet i Östersjöprovinserna
The Svenska Folkförbundet i Östersjöprovinserna ( Estonian : Rootsi Rahvaliit , German: Swedish People's Federation in the Baltic Sea Provinces ) was a party that represented the interests of the Swedish minority in Estonia between the two world wars .
The party was founded in 1917, from 1918 it published the magazine Kustbon . On March 22nd, 1919, a party congress took place at which the basic goals were defined, the Estonian Swedes claimed a ministerial post in future governments and a guaranteed quota of parliamentary seats. They called for cultural autonomy with an independent but financially equal school system, with Swedish as the language of instruction in state universities, in administration and in court cases that concerned Estonian Sweden.
Svenska Folkförbundet i Östersjöprovinserna sent representatives to the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu , for several legislative periods . The head office was located at Rüütli 9 in Tallinn , connected to the Swedish St. Michaelis Congregation and the Swedish-speaking school .
From 1929 the Swedish People's Union in Estonia formed a joint electoral block with the Baltic German Party .
In 1935, a publication ban was imposed on political organizations under the Pät government , and the Kustbon magazine was banned. Instead, Nya Kustbon was launched as an apolitical publication.
