Sweti Kirik , more rarely Sweti Kirik i Julita ( Bulgarian Свети Кирик , or Свети Кирик и Юлита) is an eight-hectare Bulgarian island in the Black Sea near the coast (250 meters) of Sozopol .
The eponymous saints Quiricus and Julitta were traditionally Christian martyrs who died in the great persecution at the beginning of the 4th century and to whom a monastery was consecrated on the island since late antiquity . In 1372 the monastery H. Kyrikos and Iulitta received a vineyard through a foundation. The monastery was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1629 (see Sozopol # Ottoman rule ).
From 1925 to 1936 there was a nautical school for orphans on the island. From 1936 to 2005 the island was used as a naval base with anchorage for Bulgarian warships .
