Swift & Company was a US company headquartered in Greeley , Colorado . The company was one of the 30 largest privately held companies in the United States , according to Forbes magazine .

Swift & Company was one of the largest meat producers in the United States. The company was founded in 1855 by Gustavus Franklin Swift . Over several decades, the company formed a powerful cartel with four other corporations with its center in Chicago , which was known as the "Big Five" (see slaughterhouse # story ). Until early 2007, Swift & Company was owned by the US investment company HM Capital Partners from Dallas. The company was sold to the Brazilian company JBS on July 12, 2007 . As a result of the acquisition, the merged company JBS Swift Group became the world's largest beef producer, with 23 locations in Brazil and 5 locations in Argentina in addition to locations in the United States.

Its major main competitors included the agricultural companies Cargill , Smithfield Packing Company, and Tyson Foods .

2006 employment scandal

In 2006, six of the company's locations in the United States were investigated for identity theft and illegal employment of immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and other Latin American countries. A total of 1282 illegal employment were uncovered as part of the investigation.
