Sydserf House is a mansion near the Scottish hamlet of Kingston in the East Lothian council area . In 1989 the building was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.

history

The monument protection authorities date Sydserf House to the 17th century. An earlier construction period seems rather unlikely. In the late 15th century the property came into the possession of the Sydserff family and served as a family seat. This would indicate a previous structure at the site. After the family died out around 1700, the lands passed to the Aitchison family . The Wadell family bought the property in the late 18th century . In the early 19th century, Sydserf House was used to house farm workers. A fire later devastated the interior. Restoration work began in the 2000s.

description

Sydserf House is isolated off the B1347 a few hundred meters south of Kingston. The two-story former home of a laird has an asymmetrical T-shaped floor plan. An entrance is in the inner corner of the building on the east side. Another entrance with a staircase is installed at the opposite interior corner. This probably dates from the 19th century. The masonry made of quarry stone was once plastered with Harl . The gable end chimneys were probably renewed during the 19th century. Modern agricultural buildings are adjacent to the east.
