Synagogue in Madrid

The synagogue in Madrid , the capital of Spain , is the first synagogue to be built after the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 (see Alhambra Edict ). It is located on Balmes Street in the Chamberí district.

The immigration of Sephardic Jews from North Africa created a larger Jewish community in Madrid , which from 1917 held its services in different rooms. The newly built synagogue was inaugurated on December 16, 1968.

On March 31, 1992, the synagogue commemorated the expulsion of Spanish Jews in 1492 in the presence of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia .
