Synagogue in Lázně Kyselka 2014

The synagogue in Kyselka ( Czech : Synagoga v Kyselka ) is a sacred building of Judaism in Kyselka in Karlovarský kraj , Czech Republic . A Jewish cemetery used to belong to the synagogue . In 2013 it was placed under monument protection.

history

Construction of the synagogue began as early as 1917. However, due to the brief cessation of the spa operations, construction work did not resume until 1923. The synagogue was opened in 1925 and served as a place of Jewish faith until 1938. Kyselka Germany , located in the Sudetenland , was also incorporated into the Munich Agreement . Almost all of the local Jews were expelled and the synagogue was badly damaged but not destroyed during the Night of the Reichspogrom in November 1938. The remnants of the building survived the Second World War almost undamaged. In May 1945, the synagogue caught fire between Czech partisans and German civilians.

After the Second World War, almost all Jews returned to Lázně Kyselka and took part in the reconstruction of the place, including the restoration of the synagogue. The sacred building was reopened in May 1948, the event coinciding with the establishment of the State of Israel . After Czechoslovakia recognized the new state four days later , an Israeli flag was hoisted in celebration. In the 1950s, the number of members of the Lázně Kyselkas Jewish community fell sharply and the synagogue fell into disrepair. In 2013 it was declared a monument and is to resume its function as a synagogue after the restoration that began in 2014.

description
