Synagogue (Lüneburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue in Lüneburg was the religious center of the local Jewish community. The foundation stone was laid on Am Schifferwall in 1892 , and the synagogue was inaugurated in 1894.

history

The so-called "Yodenstrate" was located in the street Auf der Altstadt in the Middle Ages. In the area of house number 48 there was probably a teaching house as the center of the Jewish community of Lüneburg with a mikveh in the basement.

After the Lüneburg Jewish community was under severe pressure during the National Socialist era, among other things, by the Civil Service Act and the Nuremberg Laws , the number of its members decreased so much through emigration and emigration that the synagogue had to be forcibly sold.

"The community of Lüneburg ... has now merged into five families, two of whom will emigrate in the very near future, so that not only will no church service be possible for the foreseeable future, but the burdens associated with the construction can no longer be borne. With a heavy heart, the decision was made to sell the synagogue, which is only 44 years old ... for demolition "

- Report in the Israelitisches Familienblatt about the last service on October 23, 1938

The sale implicitly and explicitly included the demolition of the building at the expense of the Jewish community. In October 1938, the inside of the synagogue was already being demolished before the Reichspogromnacht , and the building shell was torn down in the following weeks.

Building

The building was designed as a brick building with a main and two secondary domes. A symbolic instruction board was placed above the Thoranic niche on the east wall. On the west wall was the entrance, over which the gallery ran as a seating area for the women. The synagogue had a total of 200 places, although the congregation only had around 100 members at the time.

On November 9, 2018, a newly designed memorial was inaugurated at the former location.
